Match Off

Continental Cup Fixture Postponed

SAFC Ladies' final group match in the FA WSL Continental Cup which was scheduled to be played at 6pm this evening has been postponed following a pitch inspection this morning.

The referee took a decision at this early stage to avoid the need for Liverpool and supporters of both teams to travel unnecessarily.

Sonia Kulkarni, general manager, said "I attended at the ground with the referee and unfortunately there are large areas of the pitch which are waterlogged and the dugouts and goalmouths are icy".    The groundsman at Mariners Park also attended the inspection and confirmed that following the heavy downpour earlier in the week he had been unable to work the pitch and with the snow and ice that followed it has been impossible to get the pitch into a playable condition.  The general manager continued "it's an unfortunate consequence of winter football, both teams would have preferred the match to go ahead this evening, but the referee has to make a decision based on what he perceives to be in the interest of the players and the game, and has decided that the match cannot go ahead tonight.  We will work with Liverpool and the FA to reschedule the match at the earliest opportunity".

Details of the rescheduling will be made as soon as possible.
