Gary Pomfret, a brace for Nirankari Stevenage Reserves...

Fun In The Wind, Cup round-up... On a morning where pretty much every game was “a game of two halves” due to galeforce winds, there’s plenty of drama to report as usual, writes Darren “Statto” Jones.

KLM Challenge Cup Round 1:
A through-ball from John Johnston found Ean Brown who scored the only goal of the game as Broadhall saw off a spirited ten-man Marquis United to set up a last 16 meeting with Highview.

Premier Division Cup Quarter-Finals:
Eaton Johnson has taken his chance up front of late and a towering header past Andrew Palfreyman from Kyle Watson’s corner put MBDA in front. Phil Fisher added a second with a smart finish and Martin Barrett’s long free-kick onto Ashley Kersey’s head put them further in front, the top scorer was playing at centre-half due to a shortage in the position. Almond Tree United pulled one back via a Carl Lingwood penalty, but another before the break when Watson’s cross found Craig Sutherill seemed to put the game out of sight. Neil Henderson hit one back within a minute of the restart, but young substitute Aaron Kersey hit a brace to put the game out of sight, sandwiching another Lingwood spot-kick. Skillful United midfielder Ricky Lawrance was sent-off for two yellow cards towards the end.

Highview were roundly beaten by Dun Cow. Mark Phillips (hat-trick), James Dilnutt (two), Scott Mahoney, Ryan Jenner and an own goal saw them through to a meeting with MBDA for a place in the final.

Division 1 Cup Quarter-Finals:
In a game where both teams had the bare eleven, Nirankari Stevenage Reserves were even forced to play goalkeeper Kyal Currey at left-back, where he didn’t disappoint. However, it was SCS that took a deserved lead when stand in ‘keeper Steve Peary was caught out by a cross and it fell to Alfa Waititu, who smashed the ball home. The scores were soon level when Terry Patemen flicked a ball on for Gary Pomfret to run through and slot home after rounding the ‘keeper. They turned it around when a Steve Teale corner was powerfully headed home by Chris Matthews to break his duck for the season. The third came early in the second-half when Dan Gregory supplied Teale, who smashed the ball low and hard into the net. Peary dropped a cross and Dean Chadderton reduced the arrears again after a goal scramble, however, in the last minute, Pomfret played a one-two with Pateman and curled the ball home.

Luke Gumble supplied Dave Hailey with the opener for Stevenage Fencing as they went on to set up a semi-final against Marquis of Lorne. Billy-Joe Sewell continued his good scoring form with the second. Gumble hit the next goal after good work from Craig Gilbert before Tom Hillard’s pass saw Dave Hailey net another. Sewell then produced a great volley before Gumble netted again after Garry Smith’s hard work. Hillard got in on the act with a terrific diving header before the eighth came from a Gilbert scissor-kick. Coopers hit five in reply in a goal glut through Adam Stevens (two), Josh Bronti (two) and a first for the club from Rob Barton.

Kieran Hufford, Sam Stephenson, Robbie Freeman, Paul King, Sam Jones and Luke Bennett were on the mark as Stevenage Colts went through to a last four clash with Nirankari Stevenage Reserves. Stuart Rowe and George Collins replied for Broadhall Reserves.
