MK Irish survive brave Crawley Green Comeback
Despite Storm Bert bringing Snow, torrential rain and 70 mph gusts, the SSMFL league programme was largely unaffected with just 4 games of the 21 across all Divisions being cancelled.
All Premier Division games went ahead and with 2nd place Cockfosters having a blank weekend, MK Irish made good use of it with a hard fought 4-3 over 15th place Crawley Green. This did not look like it with MK cruising 3-0 as the entered the last 20 minutes. However, the visitors had other ideas scoring 2 goals in the 70th and 80th minute to get it back to 3-2. MK had keeper Ladyman to thank for a superb save to keep them in front until Boyce sealed it on 88 minutes to calm the nerves. Crawley Green pulled it back to 4-3 with a late 96th minute goal. 3rd place Arlesey Town were held to an entertaining 1-1 draw with 8th placed Tring Athletic. Wormley Rovers made short work of struggling Kempston Rovers with a spanking 7-2 win. Both London Lions and Biggleswade United kept their play off hopes intact. In form Lions eased past bottom team Shefford & Campton, whilst Biggleswade had probably the result of the day beating Winslow 4-1 despite falling behind early. Aylesbury Vale won 2-0 at FC Romania with Harpenden sharing the spoils with Colney Heath.
Eaton Socon and AFC Welwyn were the pick of the Div One teams, with Eaton’s 4-2 win over Langford putting them joint top with Irchester’s fixture at Stotfold postponed. AFC Welwyn gave new manager Brett Donnelly a grand start with a 5-0 win at Huntingdon and are placed 3rd, whilst there were wins for Letchworth GC Eagles and Buckingham Athletic.
In Division Two New Bradwell St Peter were held to a 1-1 draw by Pitstone & Ivanhoe, whilst leaders Totternhoe won 4-1 at Stony Stratford, with Bovingdon having a fine 3-1 away day at Eynesbury United.
MK Irish and New Bradwell St Peter remain the only two clubs from the three divisions unbeaten with the later having a midweek blockbuster at home to Totternhoe on Tuesday. One to pop along to see?.
