It was a great achievement for Romiley to make it to the Qtr. Finals of the Cheshire FA Sunday cup but as the 8-1 score-line suggests it was a harsh lesson in Romiley’s infancy. To their credit they never gave up and challenged for every ball but were beaten in the end by an experienced side who are past winners and one of the best Sunday teams in the Birkenhead S.L.
Midway after a bit of too and froing Dock took the lead with a penalty that could have been treated as a bit harsh, Kieran Hamm given Lawrence Szembersk no chance with his spot kick. Five minutes later a free kick just outside Romiley’s area saw Ryan Smith bulge the net for the second. It became all Dock from then until half time. Pete Morgan strolled through the defence for his sides third. Smith with another free kick netted his second then on the stroke of half time Jack Kelly added the fifth. It was a more even second half although Szembersk was forced into a good save from Jamie Heaton’s header, at the other end Ashnie Harvey who always looked dangerous on the ball forced the Dock keeper Harry Mason into the save of the game tipping Harvey’s fiercely struck shot over the bar for a corner. A few moments later Liam Millen put his free kick into the side netting. Dock hit back and got their seventh, a good move down the left a low cross into the area saw Adam Leah side foot the ball home.. Romiley’s immediate response was to find the back of the home net. George Deen putting Harvey through to score a well- deserved goal. The player who opened the scoring Kieran Hamm ended it with Dock’s eighth.
It wasn’t all bad for the league as North Reddish WMC are through to the next round of the Manchester FA Cup with a comprehensive win over the Middleton & Tameside SL side Jolly Carters. But it wasn’t jolly early on for the Club who against the run of play they found themselves behind. But things got back to normal and they drew level when Bren Reil and Ryan Jones combined for Reil to score the equaliser. They enjoyed the move that much they repeated it for Reil to get his second and give Club the lead. From then on it was all one way, Kyle Dunkerley giving the out of position keeper no chance with his well- judged lob before the half time whistle. Four more goals followed in the second half, Kyle Dunkerley got his second Charlie Murray, Scott Barton and super sub the ‘old timer’ Daley Johnson ( Dave Briscoe’s words not mine) headed in the seventh and final goal.
I believe Winton won their Manchester FA Cup game but I’ve not received any information.
There were two other cup games played. Hr. Poynton v Woodhouse Avengers opened up this seasons H. English Trophy and Edgeley Villa v Bosden Farm Rovers had the honour of opening the P.Bailey/G. Wright Trophy competition.
It was not a good start for Woodhouse who had a player sent off after only five minutes for hand balling the ball away in the penalty area, Sam Cunningham netting the spot kick. Only the home post denied Woodhouse from getting an equaliser. A let of which Poynton cashed in on, Rob Stokoe getting their second just before the break. Again Woodhouse had a chance to score when Poynton’s keeper brought down a player in the area but he redeemed himself by saving the resulting penalty. Top scorer Marcus Graham took his tally to twenty four with Poynton’s next two goals which were followed by further goals from Jordan Davies, Pete Chignell and a second Rob Stokoe goal.
Edgeley Villa went a goal behind which had a special meaning for Michael Bavister scoring for the first time at senior level, well done Mike. It brought an immediate response from Villa who equalised with a Rick Kelly goal. To prove it was no fluke Kelly went on to complete his hat trick before half time. His second from a Sean Egan pass. He saved the best till last a diving header from Harry Thomas-Leech cross. From a Mikey Brown cross Jack Atkinson scored from the edge of the box. Brad Street put Tom Hannan through for the fifth, Kyle Clarke on his debut added the sixth to end the scoring.
There were four games played in Division Two.
Didsbury Reds are on a roll with a sixth successive win but they did it the hard way. Away to Bosden Farm Albion they found themselves two nil down. Two replies from Craig McMillan put them back on level terms but yet again Albion went back in front just before half time. Probably a good talking too at half time worked. McMillan was again on target to register his hat trick. Teddy Bramwell then took over the scoring mantle putting them ahead with his spot kick, then from the edge of the area netted his second. Tom Madden from a corner guided his header into the net. Their seventh and final goal came courtesy of an O.G.
Reddish Phoenix’s frailty in defence was exposed in their game away at Wythenshawe Wanderers. They found themselves 2-0 down at half time. It got worse when the home side added a third. Phoenix finally managed to find the home net with possibly the best goal of the game, Darius Forbes picking the ball up in his own half dribbled his way past four defenders and with a measured through ball sent Harry Bird clear to net their only success.
Adswood Utd were beaten 5-2 at home to by Woodhouse Park, Aiden Smyth was the scorer of their two goals, his first from the penalty spot. Adswood’s MOM was Dale Myott while Bailey Pearson was Woodhouse’s star man .
Sadly I haven’t received any reports from Hillgate, Stockport Vikings, Manchester & Chorlton or Eden Park so I can’t report on who scored the 22 goals.
